The Value of Real-World Data

Breaking down silos and facilitating a connected care network is top of mind for many senior care providers. Sure, there are solutions out there to help facilitate the necessary processes, but how many of them can actually prove their results in a tangible way? Over the last two decades, PointClickCare has accumulated a large database of real-world data that provides key insights into patient therapy and treatment information, and the best part is, we are already able to see the results. Here’s how PointClickCare has helped customers so far.

Aiding in the Fight Against COVID-19

The pandemic has been a constant weight on the backs on healthcare facilities for the past year. New programs, processes, and a lot innovation have helped to aid in the constant battle against this deadly virus. Since the beginning, PointClickCare has been committed to providing the healthcare community with whatever we could to help. When it came to using the data we had available to help foster that innovation, we were ready and able to put our database into action.

In July 2020, PointClickCare was selected by the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) to provide de-identified patient data for the Discovery Viral Infection and Respiratory Illness Universal Study (VIRUS) COVID-19 Registry. VIRUS tracks ICU and hospital care patterns in near real-time, which enables providers to evaluate the safety and observational effectiveness of COVID-19 practices and determine practice variations across hospitals. The registry features a dashboard which tracks data on trends including length of stay in the ICU and mechanical ventilation duration. The registry also studies mortality and health impact post-ICU.

As a leader in advancing senior care, PointClickCare is uniquely positioned to provide insights about the aging population, and we were able to use these insights in real-time to partner with the SCCM on this initiative. By partnering with the SCCM we were able to identify and reduce COVID-19 practice variations across hospitals. In addition to SCCM, we also continue to work with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Healthcare Association (AHCA) on COVID-19 research.

Revolutionizing Parkinson’s Disease

In September 2020 we had another chance to make a difference in the lives of millions who suffer from Parkinson’s Disease (PD). According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, more than 10 million people worldwide live with PD. Among other symptoms, it is common for those who live with PD to experience Parkinson’s Psychosis, an ailment that can manifest in different behaviors such as hallucinations and delusions. Unfortunately, Parkinson’s Psychosis is often misdiagnosed, and patients are subsequently put on antipsychotic medication rather than treating underlying issues.

Knowing this challenge of proper diagnosis, PointClickCare saw an urgent need to help senior care providers easily diagnose accompanying psychosis. The Parkinson’s screening tool, created in partnership with ASCP, enables earlier diagnosis and facilitates a more standardized care process for this disease, allowing the industry to collect better data that can ultimately lead to better outcomes. The tool also aids in care planning by collecting specific patient information that enables conversations and provides suggestions for the team.

How does our Life Sciences solution fit in? The screening tool is programmed to ask patients a handful of research-based questions covering a variety of topics. The results of that intake offer valuable insights about the patient and those insights are automatically added to our database. These insights have the potential to provide early warning, mitigate spread, and find cures. Resulting data collected from the screening tool will be leveraged as part of PointClickCare’s Life Sciences solution, and will continually contribute to and help to further Parkinson’s psychosis treatment research.
