Sandeep Tatla, VP, Diversity, Inclusion, and Corporate Social Responsibility at PointClickCare

Life at PointClickCare: Sandeep Tatla

As the next step on our journey to get to know our leaders better, we recently spoke with our Vice President of Diversity, Inclusion, and Corporate Social Responsibility, Sandeep Tatla, to hear all about her journey and what led her to PointClickCare.

So, what is Diversity, Inclusion, and Corporate Social Responsibility? It’s more than just a long title! For Sandeep, it’s about helping our organization to become more equitable, diverse, and inclusive. Sandeep says it’s also an approach of “looking at how we as an organization are uniquely positioned to have a greater social impact and how we can address some of the bigger challenges facing the communities where we live and operate in.”

Diversity and Inclusion: A True Calling

For as long as she can remember, Sandeep has always had a passion for diversity, equity, and inclusion. But if she had to pinpoint a moment in time when she realized what she wanted to do with her life, she would say “my interest really peaked when I was quite young and I started to become aware that some people are treated differently because of their race or gender.”

She remembers being about 13 years old and reading the book “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou. For Sandeep, this was a turning point as she can recall “it really changed how I looked at the world and I carried that with me.” It was at that moment that she knew she wanted to make a difference and help make the world more inclusive for everyone.

But First, Law School

Surprisingly, she didn’t actually set out for a career in diversity and inclusion. At first, this passion to help others led her to a career in law. As she remembers it, “I was always interested in this field of work, but didn’t know how I would make the transition. When I was an employment lawyer, I started to realize that I could help my clients better by teaching them how to create more inclusive cultures that would help them deal with some of the issues they were facing. In the end, I realized that I needed to take a risk and switch it up in my pursuit of helping others.”

Joining the PointClickCare Family

After leaving law, Sandeep had built a career in Diversity and Inclusion for about 12 years before she joined us at PointClickCare earlier this year. What drew her in? Our people first mission was one of the first things that really resonated with her as she says, “I was drawn to that commitment to people and ensuring we have a culture where everyone belongs.” She also said that she appreciated the fact that PointClickCare isn’t afraid to try new things. “We don’t do things the traditional way, and I think that and our people first culture really sets us apart.”

This was especially true in the leadership she saw at PointClickCare. She admired the commitment of our leaders to create a culture that doesn’t just talk about being inclusive, it actually is inclusive. “At PointClickCare, you’re not just included, you are family.”

The Characteristics of a Great Leader

PointClickCare has some exceptional leaders, Sandeep included. But what makes a great leader? Sandeep believes great leaders have a curiosity and a commitment to continuous learning and evolving that keeps them at the top of their game. She also believes great leaders really care about their colleagues. “Not just in my line of work, but in all leadership roles, having empathy and self-awareness makes you the kind of leader that others can learn from.” In her opinion, great leaders are also those who are smart enough to know that they don’t have all the answers. “Collaboration is key to a successful leader. A great leader understands that they don’t have all the answers, and that others bring skills to the table that they do no possess. As a leader, it is your job to make sure those people have both a  seat and voice at the table.”

The Future of PointClickCare

2020 has brought with it a lot of challenges and also a lot of opportunities. It has been a year that none of us were prepared for, but it has also been a year of growth for many people. Whether that be personally or professionally, Sandeep’s mission has been to help others any way she can. “It’s about creating a space for people to share, and creating a trust and connection amongst colleagues in ways we haven’t in the past. Racism, isolation, fear, these are challenges we are faced with individually, but they are also what is bringing us together.”

As PointClickCare celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, we want to take a moment to reflect on the past and plan for the future. For Sandeep, it is in this planning for the future that she sees exciting possibilities for PointClickCare. “For me, I see us reinstating our mission to transform healthcare to make a meaningful impact on the lives of not just millions, but billions.”
