Life at PointClickCare: Nermina Lika, From Summer Intern to Seasoned Employee

PointClickCare is known for hiring people who push each other to break through barriers and reach new personal bests, and among them are some amazing students.We commit to hiring 100+ students every year, as co-ops or interns, giving them a chance to learn new skills and put their education into action.

One of our notable interns – and now employees – is Nermina Lika, our Talent Program Manager. A Ryerson University graduate, she recently celebrated her sixth anniversary with PointClickCare. Nermina is a valuable addition to our team and started her journey as a summer intern.

Learning and Doing Brought Out Her Best

Nermina’s introduction to PointClickCare came in May 2014, when she began working for the Human Resources team. She learned something new every day of her internship, which she found very different from what she’d learned in school. Besides an introduction to the “real” corporate world, she had a personal revelation as well.

“One of the biggest learning opportunities for me was finding my voice. I was very shy when I began working at PointClickCare and lacked the confidence to speak up and share my ideas. This internship – and my amazing, supportive team – truly helped me break out of my shell.”

Confirming Her Professional Aspirations

Having the chance to do meaningful work in a human resources department helped Nermina realize that her professional aspirations were on the right track.

“I strongly believe that this experience validated my decision to pursue a career in HR. I was lucky to have an incredible leader, who pushed me out of my comfort zone and provided me with the right amount of coaching and trust to set me up for success.”

Nermina praises the welcoming and understanding HR team; she was relieved that her colleagues never made her feel that she was asking too many questions. That warm work atmosphere helped formulate her next objective just a few weeks after her summer program began.

“My goal was to land a full-time opportunity with this HR team, because I couldn’t imagine working anywhere else after my summer term.  I’ll never forget the day that goal came true. It’s been incredible!”

PointClickCare Checks All the Boxes

Besides the department where she works, Nermina recognized characteristics about the company that appealed to her from day one.

“The vibrant culture, the passionate employees, and the learning opportunities available were a few key attributes that attracted me to PointClickCare. Once I became more deeply ingrained into the role and the organization, and learned about the industry we serve, I developed a strong passion about the company’s mission and where we’re headed. This passion drives me to bring my best to work each day. Joining PointClickCare full-time was one of the easiest decisions I’ve had to make.”

Needless to say, Nermina is a major advocate of PointClickCare’s programs for students.

“Part of my role at PointClickCare is leading our co-op and campus program and I truly think we’ve built something special. Our program is designed with the student experience in mind. We also ask all our students for feedback multiple times per term; their feedback drives and shapes the strategy of our program, which is continuously evolving.”

Since May 2015, 61 of our co-ops have become full-time employees. We have a feeling that as long as Nermina is part of our HR team, attracting talented, hard-working students will remain a critical piece of our workforce planning strategy.
