People of PointClickCare: Valene Mason

Introducing our VP, Provider Sales, Valene Mason! Valene has been in healthcare IT her entire career and has made it her mission to help solve the problem of how we transition patients across the continuum of care. Let’s get to know her with a few rapid-fire questions.

Rapid-Fire:

  • Describe yourself in 3 words: Organized, Empathetic, Dedicated
  • What was your dream job as a kid? A Psychologist! I was always fascinated by people, their behaviors, and why they do what they do. I did an internship in High School in this field and loved it, went to college wanting to go down that path. But one Professional Selling course and an exceptional professor and my trajectory changed.
  • What advice would you give your young self?  Done is better than perfect because perfect never gets done.
  • What is your dream vacation destination? Any beach. The sun on my face, the sound and smell of the ocean, a good book, and a cold beverage are pure bliss.
  • Coffee or tea (or something else)? Coffee. Black. All. Day. Long.

About Valene

Valene works diligently leading her team to enable the growth of the business by building healthy territories with happy customers. When she’s not working, she loves being active and often uses running as a form of therapy. So far, she’s completed a 5K and 2 marathons, and says once she got the bug, it was go big or go home. “I love the solitude of a long run in the morning to start my day. If it’s raining, even better. It’s my own little form of therapy that gets my mind right to take on whatever the day may bring.”

She also craves organization and design and on the weekend you might find her flipping a house or asking if she can organize your closet! “Some days, I’m tearing a house down to the studs and building it back into a beautiful home to flip or rent. Others I’m visiting family or friends and asking if I can help them repaint a room, rearrange furniture, or organize that messy closet (my perfect Saturday)!”

Creating Lines of Communication

Valene is adamant that in some way, everyone in the company is in sales and says, “Booking new deals is how our success is measured, but signing a new customer is only the beginning and is never a solo effort.” She told us that a big part of her responsibility is ensuring our teams have effective communication and cross functional alignment to support their efforts. “It’s about having a strategy and overcommunicating that approach to appropriately align resources so we’re all working toward the same goal.”

Journey to PointClickCare

With over 18 years of experience in her field, Valene says her journey to PointClickCare started right out of college. “I’ve been in the Healthcare IT space my full career. Starting right out of college I built my first sales territory from the ground up at a company that was a PointClickCare Partner, turned competitor, in the LTPAC space.” Eventually, she started working in Population Health and “it was here where I fell in love with the problem of how we transition patients across the continuum of care.” However, while she was passionate about this work, she wasn’t sold on the vision of ‘how’ her previous company was equipped to solve it.

Valene mentions this role taught her how critical it is to understand the impact a sale has to every part of the business and ensure those supporting teams are in sync with the vision and goals. When she heard about PointClickCare, and how our solutions were focused on solving the same struggles with transitions of care that she was focused on so many years ago, she knew everything had come full circle in her career. “For me, choosing to come to PointClickCare was because I truly believe in the problem we’re solving and the direction the company is going. When I met the people and felt the culture for the first time, the rest is history!”

About Leadership

As a successful female leader, Valene has empowering advice for future female leaders. She says that it is important to fully understand your strengths and invest in them regularly. “Surround yourself with people who believe in and support you, and who complement those strengths in ways that enable peak performance. “

Valene is passionate about building collaborative teams on the foundation of personal accountability, integrity, empathy, and grit. “I try to build teams that have the autonomy to make the right decision for themselves, for their clients, and for the business at any time. I tell them to come at every day with a sense of urgency and create a customer experience that will blow your competition out of the water.”

She also says the one word that best describes her leadership style is servant. “I think good leaders are self-aware, empathetic, great listeners and put the team and organization as their first priority.  As a leader you don’t have to be good at everything, but you need to understand your strengths, take time to understand other’s perspectives, and build a level of trust that we can be honest with where things are so we can tackle the real challenges of our job. Every day, I try to represent those key characteristics with my team and build a winning culture of hard work and a little bit of fun.”

Thanks for sharing with us, Valene!
