PointClickCare Life Sciences Releases Study on Medication Prescribing for Type 2 Diabetes in U.S. Long-Term Care Settings

Mississauga, ON—July 5, 2023PointClickCare Technologies, a leading healthcare technology platform enabling meaningful collaboration and access to real‐time insights at every stage of the patient healthcare journey, released its latest study today in partnership with researchers from Nova Southeastern University, Becton, Dickinson and Company, and Embecta. Leveraging the PointClickCare Life Sciences’ deidentified real-world database comprising electronic health records from LTC facilities, researchers were able to identify a series of opportunities for improving diabetes management in LTC residents with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Diabetes is common among older individuals, including residents in LTC facilities. With a growing population of adults older than 65 years of age with diabetes (24%), caring for LTC residents with diabetes is associated with many challenges, including the need to also manage multimorbidity, polypharmacy, physical frailty, cognitive impairment, dementia, and physical limitations. The goal of the research was to characterize the prescribing patterns for glucose-lowering medication annually, both overall and by resident characteristics for LTC residents with T2DM. The researchers also set out to quantify the annual frequency of hypoglycemia and emergency department transfers for hypoglycemia among LTC residents with T2DM prescribed glucose-lowering medication, overall and stratified by predefined medication types.

“With the largest database of senior care patient data in existence, PointClickCare is honored to be a part of this important study and so many other studies that are identifying correlations between specific treatments and outcomes, and gathering new insights into the determinants and patterns of health-related events in senior care.”

Jeff Wessinger, General Manager of PointClickCare Life Sciences.
