New E-Prescribing Standard Expected to Improve Patient Safety, Workflow Efficiency, and Prescription Accuracy

MISSISSAUGA, ON – April 22, 2020 – PointClickCare, the leading cloud-based software platform for the senior care market, announced support for the use of the National Council for Prescription Drug Program’s (NCPDP) SCRIPT version 2017071. SCRIPT 2017071 is a messaging protocol used to electronically communicate medication orders to pharmacies. The new standard aims to help healthcare providers and pharmacies minimize manual processes that currently require leaving their workflows to exchange critical patient care information outside of the EHR.

NCPDP’s new standard aims to improve functionality and workflows using transactions identified by the industry as vital in improving patient safety, clinical decision-making, as well as business and administrative efficiencies. It includes additional information from the medication order, increased character capacity within order directions, and new message types to improve interoperability when orders transmit to the pharmacy. With the ability to send larger order directions, clinicians will no longer need to fax orders larger than 140 characters.

“The new e-prescribing standard supports a tremendous breadth of functionality to improve patient care and administrative efficiencies,” says Andy Brigant, vice-president and general manager, Pharmacy, PointClickCare. “Once implemented, we expect the new standard to allow our customers to access clinical data within their existing workflows which will ultimately lead to more informed decision-making.”

PointClickCare is working with each of our pharmacy partner vendors to validate successful transmission of orders using the new SCRIPT 2017071 standard. PointClickCare will support both SCRIPT 10.6 and SCRIPT 2017071 until the transition is complete, with a plan to sunset support for SCRIPT 10.6 by December 1, 2020.
